JAPN 304 Intro Translate & Interpret
Description
This course is an introduction to translating and interpreting that provides an overview of the knowledge necessary for the field of translation and interpretation. Students will study general issues involved in translating and interpreting and the building blocks for the necessary knowledge and techniques including rapid reading, analyzing, summarizing and paraphrasing, listening comprehension, and shadowing. Taught in Japanese.
Narrative
In the beginning of the class we studied what scanning and skimming is. We applied both of these skills in order to speed read in Japanese. Scanning and skimming are different techniques for speed reading. Scanning is a way to get the gist of what you are reading, and skimming is distracting particular information from a reading quickly. The second half of the class was spent learning how to properly translate. It is important to keep cultural context while translating, and to be conscious that direct translations do not always work.
JAPN 404 Advanced Japanese Research
Description
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to finalize research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media. Taught in Japanese.
Narrative
In this class we learned how to write academic style papers, and aimed at developing proficiency in oral and written presentations. Essentially this class was to prepare us for our capstone presentation and paper. In class assignments tasked us with learning a specific grammar point or style of writing and applying that into our own examples. This helped to reinforce what we were studying, and to prepare us for a more academic writing for our capstone paper.
WLC 400 Major Capstone
Description
Students work with the instructor and WLC faculty advisers to research, synthesize, write and present their Capstone projects. Students will also assemble a Graduation Portfolio reflecting how each MLO was met. This course is required for all Japanese, Spanish and World Languages and Cultures majors.
Narrative
In WLC 400 we developed and fleshed out our capstone project in class. We also covered the requirements for our e-portfolio, database research on computers and in the library, and we also did in class presentations on our capstone progress. Our presentations were essential to receive feedback, and to make appropriate changes. Each week we kept up with our schedule to complete our capstone project on time, while balancing our progress on our e-portfolio in order to reflect on our MLOs required for graduating.
