In Fall 2015 I took the class JAPN 320S. This class is the upper division service learning for Japanese majors at California State University Monterey Bay. For this class, I visited a local elementary school for three hours every week. At the elementary school, I was in charge of tutoring elementary school students with their homework and later in the day teaching them Japanese language and culture. Before each Japanese class that I taught, me and my group members had to make a lesson plan detailing what we would teach and how we would do that. Every lesson was a new challenge, but we had to make sure we were teaching the children something that they would find interesting. My favorite part of this service learning was interacting with the children while helping them with their homework. Every child is unique and had something interesting about them. It was such an enjoyable time getting to know each and every one of them. I am so happy to have had this experience. As for the homework side of the CSUMB class we were tasked to do a total of three power point presentations showcasing our experience in our service learning. Our final presentation was completely in Japanese and focused on our experience overall in our service learning, such as what our goals were in the beginning, what our challenges were, and what we learned specifically. We also had reading assignments each week. Most of these readings were a scholarly look at the importance of engaging multicultural and marginalized students in the class as well as being aware of the socioeconomic situations around us. We were challenged to apply these readings to our service learning classrooms.
