JAPN 303 Business Japanese
Description
This course develops functional use of Japanese language for various types of situations and events that occur in the daily business environment. The types of situations include formal introductions, basic business rules, business etiquette, honorifics, and how to write business documents and email. It also presents and expands on cultural perspectives and concepts as they impact the business world. Taught in Japanese.
Narrative
The most important part of JAPN 303 in my opinions was learning how important non-verbal actions are in Japan. For instance the depth of your bow displays our relationship with the person we are greeting. A quick shallow bow is more casual, but still respectful. A deeper bow is used when talking to people outside of our group or business and even with customers. A very deep bow would indicate that we are apologizing or very honored to be in someone's presence. I feel that learning these nonverbal nuances of Japanese culture has helped me better understand how Japanese culture behaves. With that said, I would also like to improve my speaking skills in Japanese. I feel that I am adequate at reading, but I find speaking to still be very difficult for me.
The final project for the class was to make a video displaying Japanese business manners. The task was actually very daunting to begin with, but I had a great group of friends to work with. We were able to successfully make a very entertaining and educational movie that displays proper ways to function in a Japanese business setting. The process of making this movie was one of my favorite moments at CSUMB.

JAPN 403 Pre Capstone
Description
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to develop research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media.
Narrative
In this class we learned about what capstone means for the Japanese major, what is required of it, and how to prepare for our eventual capstone research. We learned what makes a good research topic, and how to develop research questions that we want to learn from our research and eventual survey. The class really emphasized in developing a good topic that can be researched with relative ease, but also something that can not be answered by a simple internet search. By the end of the class I chose a partner to work with and together we developed a research topic that we wanted to build our capstone around. Essentially, the objective of the Pre Capstone class was to start the foundation and set a time table to complete our capstone research the following semester.
