Reflective Narrative:
Japanese as a college major requires two fundamental practices. Of course the language of Japanese is required, but also understanding Japanese culture is too. The Japanese language is very context sensitive, and many vocabulary can be completely different depending on who we are talking with. The difference between casual conversations and formal conversations is very big. Knowing the culture is a good way to be able to spot the different situations and settings of when one should speak casually or formally. Also, culture is important to learn in order to begin understanding the way of thinking for a certain region or country. Their are reasons why cultures have different customs and beliefs and it is important to study how these customs effect everyday life of the people we hope to build relationships with someday. In JAPN 308 we studied what is pop culture for Japan, and how that culture has grown and evolved over the past decades. Through the study of Japanese Cinema in JAPN 310 I learned various ways that Japanese film makers display their culture on film. I learned what type of themes and philosophies that film makers display to their audience which in turns influences the everyday person. Films can also influence social interactions and attitudes carried that the viewer will take in.
